Beginnings

Apex Valves was founded by Alan Gracie in 1982, operating from his West Auckland garage. What began as a small operation producing low-pressure plumbing control valves quickly evolved into a trusted name in New Zealand’s plumbing industry - driven by innovation, quality, and a strong commitment to New Zealand-made products.

A Family Business

Apex was a proudly family-run business for decades, with many of the next generation starting out on the factory floor. Alan’s son Bevan joined in 1995 as Production Manager and later became General Manager, leading Apex through major growth until the sale to Watts. Alan’s younger son Mark served as Sales and Export Manager from 2013 to 2017 and returned to Apex Valves as General Manager in January 2024. Expended family members David and Martyn Salisbury, also assumed key roles after long tenures within the company. David now works in Technical Sales, while Martyn serves as factory manager and has been instrumental in numerous technological advancements across the facility.

Growth

In 1986, Apex moved to it’s second location in Glen Eden, Auckland. This move allowed the company to significantly increase its production capacity and better serve a growing customer base. During this period, Apex expanded its product range into the agricultural sector and partnered with Hydroflow to distribute and sell its products nationwide. With continued investment in tooling, injection moulding, and in-house manufacturing, the company focused on developing practical solutions for New Zealand’s trades and rural industries.

The Glen Eden site served as the foundation for Apex’s growth until 1993, when the company relocated to its current site in Avondale. This move enabled further expansion and enhanced manufacturing capabilities. Over the years at 367 Rosebank Road, Apex’s steady growth led to the gradual widening into the three neighbouring buildings, creating additional space to support increasing demand and ongoing innovation.

Anka

In 2014, Apex further expanded its product portfolio by acquiring Anka Products—a respected manufacturer of fittings, hose nozzles, check and foot valves, swivels, and pipe unions for low-density polyethylene pipe. Known for its distinctive blue nut fittings, Anka had become the preferred choice among farmers and growers over its 18-year history. The acquisition allowed Apex to integrate Anka’s offerings into its own manufacturing operations, enhancing its range of agricultural water control products. Anka continues to operate as a division of Apex and is proudly distributed by Hydroflow.
